Just what I needed

Created by Louise 2 years ago

I have so many memories of Ralph. I was privileged enough to have done the DMAN (2001 - 2005). This was a transformational experience on so many levels. I am in awe of Ralph's courageous leadership in establishing the CMC and the DMAN programme.

Whilst on the DMAN programme I grappled with something... I did not always agree with Ralph and did not now how to express my dissenting voice because I was very aware of Ralph's 'guru' status.

In 2004 I was living in South Africa and Ralph came to Cape Town to do a guest lecture. He reached out to me and suggested that we should meet for a conversation. It turned out that he asked for this conversation in order to tell me that he did not think I had it in me to complete my thesis.

Almost 20 years later I still remember that moment as if it was yesterday! I remember driving back home and being incensed. I was SO angry. Angry enough to go back to my office and articulate clearly why I disagreed with Ralph.

It was only much later that I realised that Ralph knew that I needed a metaphorical 'kick under my backside'. He delivered this and got exactly the response he had hoped for.

Ralph has inspired me for 25+ years and I suspect he will continue to do so for many more years.

With deep appreciation
