First Meeting Ralph

Created by Bob 2 years ago
I was the head of the Division of Business at Hertfordshire - it was then the Hatfield Polytechnic - and I was interviewing for a senior lecturer in accounting and finance.  Out of the blue, I received a call from Ralph and I short-listed him for interview even though the closing date was long past.  Ralph impressed me, he did not have the traditional background for the post as advertised but I was struck by his outstanding intellectual and personal quality.  His interview went well but the other panel members questioned his 'fit' for the job.  Occasionally one has to back one's judgement and in my view, we could not miss the opportunity to appoint someone of his personal character and ability.  In my time at Hatfield he never disappointed - indeed he excelled - I don't think he ever taught accounting but he taught so much more.  I kept some contact with him in the years that followed but eventually, I lost touch with him.  But, he was the finest appointment I ever made, he gave much more than he promised, his work and his insights will live on in the thoughts and efforts of others.  He was a giant among men - if I could be half the man he was I would be content.  Rest in peace Ralph, you have run the course and I am sure you have won.
